Dalton State Hosts Basketball Fundraiser as Part of Homecoming Week

The Dalton State Foundation and the College’s Department of Campus Recreation will co-host the second annual “Hoops for Higgins” basketball fundraiser as part of the College’s Homecoming festivities this week.

The game between Dalton State alumni and faculty/staff will be on Saturday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. in Bandy Gymnasium on campus.

Admission is $5 per person at the door, and all proceeds go to the Spence Higgins, Jr., Memorial Scholarship Fund at Dalton State.  Legendary Roadrunners men’s basketball coach Melvyn Ottinger will be the honorary coach for the alumni team.

“With the generous consent of the Higgins family, we hosted the first ‘Hoops for Higgins’ alumni versus faculty/staff basketball game with the College’s Department of Campus Recreation last year in honor of Dalton State’s first elected student body president,” said David Elrod, director of the Dalton State Foundation.  The Foundation oversees alumni relations for the College.

“This is Homecoming Week, and the campus is full of activities and events for students, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends of the institution,” Elrod said.

“The fun culminates on Saturday with several events, including ‘Hoops for Higgins,’ and we’re hearing that the faculty/staff team is out to avenge last year’s loss to the alumni.”

Higgins was the first elected student body president at Dalton State in 1968.  After he completed his studies, he continued as an active member of the local community, and when he died in 2014, his passing earned a front-page notice in The Daily Citizen and a public comment from the College.

“Spence is held in such high esteem on campus that our premier student leadership awards are named for him,” Elrod said.  “We invite everyone who enjoys a good game, who knew Spence, or who wants to support scholarships for our students to join us Saturday.”
