As you click through the Department of Communication’s pages, you will see that we include a wide variety of disciplines and degree programs. You will also find that we have an excellent and award-winning faculty with vast experience in teaching; theatrical, film, and musical performance and direction; broadcasting; and industry. They are also accomplished as scholars in foreign language, media studies, public speaking, intercultural communication, humor, music, college teaching and learning, and interpersonal communication. Best of all, they are committed instructors who bring a passion for their subject matter to students in and out of the classroom. Our faculty members lead many initiatives on campus and are recipients of every major faculty award at Dalton State.

So what does the Department of Communication offer students? A great deal, and we welcome inquiries about how we can help you achieve your goals and dreams.

COMMUNICATION

Check any list of “what employers want in employees” and you will see that “strong communication skills” including teamwork, writing, critical thinking, public speaking, and creative problem-solving are high on the list. That and much more is what the Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication is about. This four-year program includes optional concentrations in general communication studies, business and corporate communication, digital/social media, and film.

MUSIC

We offer the Associate of Arts in Music, from which a student can transfer to a four-year college after obtaining a solid basis in music theory and skills, applied lessons, and ensemble experience. As part of the music program, we offer choir, concert band, and small ensemble as well as lessons in piano, guitar, horn, saxophone, trombone, flute, woodwinds, violin, and bass.,

THEATRE

The Department of Communication also allows students to earn an Associate of Arts in General Studies with a pathway in Theatre. In this major, the student would take 18 hours of theatre courses and performance and be involved in our twice-yearly productions or our innovative touring Children’s Theatre program.

FILM

Students in the film concentration take 18 hours of credit at the Georgia Film Academy in Fayetteville. Georgia Film Academy, a joint venture of the University System of Georgia, the Technical College System, and the film industry, submerges the students in the film industry with state-of-the-art equipment and classes from film professionals for an exciting and career-focused learning experience.

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES

We also lead the Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, which allows students to develop a liberal arts program that utilizes former and future credits to fit their career and educational goals. If you are an adult learner with past college credit, the B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies might be an excellent way for you to complete your degree and move on in your education and work.

For those who do not wish to pursue those majors, we also offer core classes and electives in French and Spanish, communication, theatre, music, and art. We strongly believe all of these courses form the foundation of an excellent college education. Again, contact us with questions about the Department of Communication programs and classes.
